Brother Derek wowed the horsemen on the West Coast in the early part of the season and arrived at Churchill Downs as the odds on favorite, to win the “Run for the Roses”. But when the draw was made for the big race, Hendricks talented horse was saddled with the 18 post position in the overcrowded race.

Brother Derek had a bad trip in the Derby, racing wide on the first turn and very wide on the second, while Barbaro had a perfect trip. He probably wouldn't have beaten Barbaro that day anyway, but, with better racing luck, he would have been much closer. His trainer Dan Hendricks believes the effort was as good as any his colt has had in his career.

"I guess you could say it's his best race," he said of the Derby performance. "He made it back. He took dirt. He took adversity. He went wide and he circled the field and he lost a shoe and still finished a very creditable fourth. I could easily say he could have been second. So that's got to be one of his best races."

The Preakness will be a leisurely stroll on the beach compared to the traffic jam in the Derby and Brother Derek can scoot with Barbaro. I think he turns the tables here!

Design your landscape like a professional - think layers

Have you ever wondered what makes the difference between a nice, neat looking yard and a breathtaking professionally landscaped one?

Of course, there are many other elements about a design other than just using layers of plants, but this is the one that makes for a spectacular garden and landscape versus one that is attractive but somewhat mundane.

In using layers, you'll find for example, large shrubs in the background or maybe some of the tall slender Italian Cypress-type trees, but in every part of the design there will be other shorter plants and flowers in front of those.

So if you think your small little yard can't look amazingly beautiful and get a lot of attention from the neighbors, think again!

One example that could be used in a smaller landscape and get that gorgeous, lush appearance would be to have the tallest shrubs say, against your back fence (maybe Red-Tipped Photinia or a Privet Hedge with 2-3 tall cypress-type trees either in front of the hedge or off to the side, and then in front of that could be some Japanese Boxwood, kept to about a 4-6' height (depending on the height of the hedges in back) and then to compliment the layers, maybe a statue or birdbath surrounded by smaller shrubs (such as dwarf Youpon Hollies or dwarf Pittosporum or flowers as an alternative).

Corners are wonderful for creative landscaping. One of the favorite corners in my own landscape is one between my back gate and the house. I've put two 4x6 pieces of trellis there (one on the fence, the other on the house to make a corner of trellis) and it is covered with lush beautiful ivy. In front of that is a birdbath on which I cemented a 20" angel, and the birdbath is surrounded by small Youpon Hollies flanked by a beautiful hot pink Sage Bush and deep green Lariope. Simple, layered, inexpensive, but striking and very finished looking!

If you have a center-of-yard type garden design such as flowers or a ground cover around a tree for example, and you have several plants there, the same "layering theory" would apply: large plants nearest the tree and smallest at the borders of the planting.

What's really worse about second hand smoke than the damage smokers bring on themselves is that so many of the second hand smoke victims are children - those unable to make the decision to avoid the harmful effects of the smoke for themselves. Second hand smoke is also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Over 400 chemicals are part of the mix in secondhand smoke. Over 50 of these chemicals are proven or probable as cancer causing agents in humans. The term for these is carcinogens.

Second hand smoke is everywhere - whether you are home in the presence of a smoker, or in the workplace (though this is becoming increasingly uncommon) and in public places such as restaurants, bars, casinos and bowling alleys. While many U. S. states have begin to outlaw public smoking it's generally for restaurants where those under 18 are present. Bars are still prime places for secondhand smoke, as are bowling alleys and casinos.

If you don't stop smoking those who smoke along with you second hand will have an increased lung cancer and heart disease risk. Children will be the ones most negatively affected by this second hand smoke. Kids have lungs that aren't completely developed as yet and because of this they are far more susceptible to secondhand smoke and it's negative ramifications. They are also the ones that have absolutely no control of the environment in which you've placed their health. Children and infants who are exposed to second hand smokes suffer from sudden infant death syndromes (SIDS), bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma far more often than those who have non-smoking parents and adult family members.

In the U. S. alone 3000 people succumb to lung cancer as a result of secondhand smoke, even though are people who never smoked or stopped smoking. Death by coronary heart disease thanks to second hand smoke occur in 35,000 Americans each year.

Children develop asthma as a result of secondhand smoke at the rate of 8000 to 26,000 each year. Bronchitis numbers are even worse - 150,000-300,000 - and these are children younger than 18 months, up to 15,000 of whom will have to be hospitalized. Only 40 percent of those who don't smoke or stop smoking have no evidence of bodily harm due to secondhand smoke.

The most disturbing fact about how your failure to stop smoking effects small children is that the median state figure for children in each state affected by secondhand smoke. The highest percentage is found in Kentucky, where more than a third of children are harmed.

Passover, or Pesach as it is called in Hebrew, is the 8 day festival where the Jews celebrate their liberation from Egypt more than a thousand years ago. One of the most important features of this freedom festival is that the Jews cannot eat anything that is leavened. They eat unleavened bread.

They must also make sure that no bread crumbs exist in or around the house: the cupboards, the drawers, the kitchen, behind the bed, under the refrigerator and anywhere else where crumbs might have fallen through. To ensure that the house is clean of leavened food materials, the Jews have to clean the entire house from top to bottom as thoroughly as possible. And they do. The President looked at him in wonder, "Listen, Samuel, I had no idea that this was so difficult for you. I thought it was a trivial matter. But you don't have to leave. Everything will be the same as before: you can stay here with us without converting.

Samuel returned home happy and grinning from ear to ear. He ran to his wife, who was watching Ricky Lake, "You won't believe it! It's a miracle. We are going back to being Jews, and I still retain my job."

His wife looked at him with eyes that spat fire, and said," Are you mad?"

Samuel was shocked. "But I thought that this is what you wanted!" He cut in. "All this while you have been crying and complaining. Don't you wish to go back to becoming a Jew""

The place most worth considering where instruction in how to learn a second language abounds just might surprise you. Africa is the place where more people are multilingual than anywhere else in the world. Thousands of her people speak multiple dialects, different languages in which they conduct all manner of business, multiple native tribal languages, and colonial languages. These Africans have done so without the availability of a classroom, textbooks, workbooks, CD's or cassette recordings, or teachers. And yet, they learn these languages with what would seem to us an almost uncanny ease.

In almost every case, it was a work situation in which these folks acquired their new languages. They left their hearth and home to go to another village or city where there was a work opportunity. They found some sort of job and began working with others who spoke another language. The newcomers did not enroll in a language course. They just worked side by side with the people who spoke the new language. They listened. That's all. They just listened. Before long, they began to understand what was being said. Little by little, the confusing chatter became clear. Then came small steps in production in the new language. They lived in the environment in which the living language thrived (immersion). Soon production in the new language emerged. It seems these people learned the new language effortlessly.

Some critics will point out that adults are not children and therefore an approach to second language acquisition should not be given such a simple example for adults as "passive listening." And yet, languages are absorbed, assimilated, or acquired by people who are unable to afford expensive language courses using the African method. We met many bilingual Mexicans in the resort areas of Mexico who learned their English in the exact same way as in the African example I've explained above.

The way in which children learn their native tongue is the same way poor, third-world people (adults) learn scores of different languages. Need drives them to do what is necessary to learn the language in which they will be more successful in making a living. They do not worry about verbs, direct object pronouns, syntax, tenses, or moods. They just listen.

They listen to the language being spoken in the context of seeing the language being acted out by the native speakers. They listen, repeat, and make visual associations with what they are hearing. Soon, they begin to mimic, produce, and put together sentences in simple, feeble, and often error-filled combinations.

The African way of second language acquisition is THE WAY in which we all learned our native tongue and still is THE WAY in which we acquire a new language.

10 possible causes of the obesity epidemic

It's well accepted that reduced physical activity and fast food are linked to obesity. But the evidence that these are the main causes of obesity is largely circumstantial. To stimulate debate, experts suggest 10 other possible causes of obesity, outlined in the International Journal of Obesity.

1. Sleep debt. Getting too little sleep can increase body weight. Today, many get less shut-eye than ever.

2. Pollution. Hormones control body weight. And many of today's pollutants affect our hormones.

3. Air conditioning. You have to burn calories if your environment is too hot or too cold for comfort. But more people than ever live and work in temperature-controlled homes and offices.

4. Decreased smoking. Smoking reduces weight. People smoke much less than they used to.

5. Medicine. Many different drugs including contraceptives, steroid hormones, diabetes drugs, some antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs can cause weight gain. Use of these drugs is on the upswing.

6. Population age, ethnicity. Middle-aged people and Hispanic-Americans tend to be more obese than young European-Americans. Americans are getting older and more Hispanic.

7. Older moms. There's some evidence that the older a woman is when she gives birth, the higher her child's risk of obesity. Women are giving birth at older and older ages.

8. Ancestors' environment. Some influences may go back two generations. Environmental changes that made a grandparent obese may "through a fetally driven positive feedback loop" visit obesity on the grandchildren.

9. Obesity linked to fertility. There's some evidence obese people are more fertile than lean ones. If obesity has a genetic component, the percentage of obese people in the population should increase.

10. Unions of obese spouses. Obese women tend to marry obese men, and if obesity has a genetic component, there will be still more obese people in the next generation.

Important questions to ask when choosing insurance coverage

When was the last time you sat down and actually thought about your insurance coverage? Let's face it, it's not exactly on the weekly "to do list" for a wide variety of reasons and so… it's not surprising that many are caught unprepared when an emergency happens. One thing to remember is that you don't have to live in an area susceptible to a major disaster (i. e. living in an earthquake or hurricane prone area) to suddenly realize that your current insurance coverage is woefully out of date.

Purchasing insurance is clearly a daunting task for many, but because it's more or less a necessary evil I've listed a number of key factors to consider when you finally do take the time to make sure your coverage is up to par.

Pre Existing Conditions and Full Disclosure

Before being approved for any insurance coverage all applications are looked at by an underwriter. It's an underwriter job to pretty much look at everything about you related to your medical history, when you apply for any type of individual health insurance policy.

Be honest about everything and be sure to disclose any pre-existing conditions because in most instances the underwriter will find out about them anyway and if they do and you failed to mention them you could get denied coverage. And even if the underwriter doesn't catch a pre-existing condition that you failed to mention and you do get approved you're still not in the clear. The reason, if you ever file a claim before payment they'll look at your history again and if they find out about your pre-existing condition at that time, not only will they deny your claim but you could also be guilty of fraud and have to pay a fine, maybe something even worse.

Although many companies will not insure pre-existing conditions, some will but only with a 30, 60, 90, and 120+ waiting period while others are legally mandated to carry "guaranteed issue" policies. Prior to signing on with a company, get a detailed list of what is considered a pre-existing condition, the exclusionary period and the type of coverage that will be provided once the exclusion ends.

Rate Comparison

Of course, rates are important but remember to get quotes on policies that have the same type of coverage. Get a copy of all quotes so that you can see the type and amount of coverage in each category and then make sure that every quote you get is based on those same coverage amounts so that as the saying goes… you are comparing apples to apples. If you receive a quote that is way below quotes from other companies make sure it's legitimate by asking how they can offer coverage at such a reduced rate. The answer may be that a particular company specializes in a particular type of coverage and so they offer it at a substantially lower rate but then again… if it's too good to be true then it usually is. How to build your triceps

Many people who seek to increase the muscle in their triceps area tend to make the common mistake of believing that they are already being worked when you are focused on the chest muscles. While they do receive a bit of a work-out through this process, it is not enough to truly build them enough to show an increase in muscle mass.

Thus it is necessary to also do exercises specifically designed to build the triceps muscles. While training the triceps is necessary independently of working the chest, it is important to realize that to work them back to back would be detrimental to the development of the triceps as they, too, do need to rest between workouts and they do receive a minimal amount of stress during the chest workout. So it is advised that you leave a two day window before and after the chest workout before beginning a triceps regimen.

Once again, it is important to remember that all muscle groups need to be warmed up before you attempt to work them hard. So initially, it is it is important to stretch out these muscles before beginning to work them more intensely.

Once you have warmed up your triceps, the series of exercises below seem to be the most effective according to the body building experts to develop muscular and deeply cut triceps.

To begin, a very popular and effective means of developing those triceps is known as “Closed Grip Pushdowns.” These are accomplished by:

- Standing with your feet a slight distance apart in a tension weight machine. - Grasp the weight bars at waist height firmly with palms facing towards you. - Push the weight bar down; dropping shoulders slightly to fully work the triceps, and add an extra squeeze at the bottom for extra tension in the muscle. - Return to the starting position.

This exercise puts direct resistance on the triceps and is exceptionally effective in building the mass of the same. This routine should be done in three sets with twelve to fifteen reps. in each to assure a solid work out of the triceps muscles.

Another triceps-geared exercise that can be quite effective in building triceps is called “Closed Grip Bench Presses.”

- This can be done either sitting, standing, or lying down. - The barbell or weight bar is should be in front of you with the elbows slightly bent. - Pull the barbell or weight bar towards your chest until the elbows meet the triceps, just short of lockout while keeping the tension on your triceps. - Return to the starting position.

This exercise directly applies resistance to the triceps and can be felt through the tension in the arms at the end of each move. It should be done in four sets of eight to ten reps each.

“Parallel Bar Dips” are a wonderful triceps activity as they affect all three muscles in the triceps group at once. It is a workout move that truly adds to the building of muscle and should be attempted to be included in any plan to increase the triceps mass. Begin by:

- Positioning yourself on parallel bars with your back completely straight. *Leaning forward transfers the resistance to the pectoral muscles so to work the triceps, a straight back is essential. - Bending your elbows, drop your body as it is being held off of the ground by your arm strength only until your biceps meet your forearms and hold. - Return to starting position.

This exercise should be done in four sets with eight to ten reps. in each. This is truly a great way to work those triceps and make them all you want them to be!

But let us remember, it is the workout of these muscles in a regimented way without overdoing it or under-working them that will bring about the results you desire. All the curls in the world will not bring about the results that these few exercises, a healthy diet filled with a lot of protein, and a little devotion to structured workouts will give you in the end.

Three deadly sins to avoid when choosing a professional speaker

As I survey the speaker’s market I’ve become a tad weary willfully wearing the title "Motivational Speaker". All speakers worth their salt seek to motivate or cause action. Maybe it's just me, but does the mere mention of the term "Motivational Speaker" conjure irritating mental pictures in your subconscious mind? There are far too many stereotypes being propagated regarding speakers. I will address a few of these speaker stereotypes and hopefully simultaneously construct a not-to-do list that aspiring speakers may use on their roads to success in the lucrative speaking industry.

Motivational Speaker Stereotype Number One:

The "Over-The-Top" Speaker

The "Over-The-Top" Speaker or the O. T.T. Speaker appears to have discovered a new fad diet which includes mountains of pure sugar and caffeine. The O. T.T. will at any given moment find it necessary to expend tremendous amounts of energy racing about the platform as if a sniper has them in the crosshairs. During smaller office presentations, The O. T.T. speaker may also be seen jumping atop a desk shouting "Go For It!” or performing their best impressions of former Governor and one time Presidential hopeful, Howard Dean's famous "YEAAAAAHHHHHH".

It didn't work for Mr. Dean either.

Reality:

I do not desk hurdle. Many professional speakers whom I admire keep their gestures natural and their tones conversational in nature. This is not “Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey” and a speaker's stage is not a big tent.

Motivational Speaker Stereotype Number Two:

The "T. M.I." Speaker

In efforts to emotionally connect with the audience, the notorious T. M.I. Speaker offers up way Too Much Information of a personal nature. To the bewilderment of the hiring authority, the TMI speaker utilizes 90% of their time recanting inner-turmoil, teary-eyed, blow-by-blow commentaries of abuse, personal struggles and tragedies. Though touching, the program's focus is obscured and the message diluted by the T. M.I. Speakers deluging pity party. The T. M.I. speaker fails to realize the goal of any program is to inspire some sort of action of the audience, not to become a martyr or charity case.

Reality:

Engaging your audience is the goal of any professional speaker, but personal stories should only be used if they directly support and impact the overall theme of your program. Please allow me to cement my viewpoint with a brief story: During my first professional position as a paralegal for a government agency I had the marvelous opportunity to work side-by-side with a number of experienced individuals and mentors. These mentors taught me many compelling business principles that I currently utilize. One day at work on a crowded elevator I struck up a conversation with one such mentor. In the efforts to protect the innocent and the ignorant I'll refer to the mentor in this story as "Mr. Edwards".

Me: Hello Mr. Edwards, I noticed you in the lobby earlier today...

Mr. Edwards: Yes, Timothy my family paid me a visit...

Me: Really? Was that your son you were holding earlier?

Mr. Edwards: Oh no, that was my nephew. I can't have kids, I'm sterile.

Me: Okay

The "High-Tech, Low-Performance" Speaker

The H. T.L. P. Speaker loves to put on a show! The H. T.L. P's program not only begins, its middle and its end is littered with state-of-the-art, eye-popping sound-effects and a fantastic frenzy of flashy visuals. In the outset the audience is totally mesmerized, but it becomes grossly apparent that the H. T.L. P. is heavy on the glitz and light on the substance. The H. T.L. P. is a show-person. The H. T.L. P’s entire speech can be boiled down to a bookmark of inspirational quotes which can be readily found by any 12-year-old conducting a 30-second search on GOOGLE. Yes, the H. T.L. P. catches the audience’s attention, but has no inkling where to go from there, except, you guessed it, onto the next variation of visual, vain displays which culminate into sensory overload and useful substance deprivation.

Solution:

Many professional motivational speakers acknowledge the need to capture the audience's attention, but should a professional speaker need a truckload of explosives to do it? No. The highly regarded professional speaker realizes that he or she is the distributor of the information being disseminated not some slide projector, movie screen or artificial simulator. The speaker who relies too heavily on electronics to deliver a message detracts from the human-element of their content. Limiting the bells and whistles in the show will allow both the audience and the speaker to focus on the theme and purpose of the program. Clients watching their Rate of Investment (ROI) versus their Rate of Return (ROR) will expect less show, more business and measurable results to justify a speaker’s fee.
